PFC-HS holds cyber parenting seminar, elects new officers

Mrs. Ma. Theresa H. Duran-Dy, a counselor from the Center for Family Ministries (CeFaM) of the Ateneo de Manila University, discusses issues in parenting in the light of the cyberspace during the Parenting Seminar held by the Paulinian Family Circle-HS Department, Inc., August 16, 2014.

The new set of PFC-HS Dep't, Inc. Officers listen to Sr. Maria Remedios R. Cayetano, SPC, Directress-HS Principal, during their presentation to the parents who attended the parenting seminar cum elections.
The Paulinian Family Circle-HS Department, Inc., through its President, Engr. Annabelle M. Roldan, in collaboration with the school administration, held a one-day Parenting Seminar with the theme #IWantToBeACyberParent on August 16, 2014 at the Fr. Louis Chauvet Gymnasium.

The parenting seminar became also the opportunity of parents to elect their class representatives and the core officers of the organization.

Ma. Theresa H. Duran-Dy of the Center for Family Ministries (CeFaM) of the Ateneo Manila University served as the guest speaker and resource person. A parent herself with three teenage daughters, she shared anecdotes of her own family life, especially her experiences with growing up children with Internet access. She recommended that children should be guided and closely monitored by parents in their surfing time. She said that computers at home should be found at a common place where family members could see what is being surfed about and should not be inside the rooms of the children where they could even lock in privacy.

She added that web cameras should not be a common fixture of Internet surfing as there could be a lot that pose danger on their use.

To be a cyberparent is challenging, she admitted.

She went on to share three parenting styles which are prevalent among parents.

"Autocratic parenting is characterized by being strict, too much controlling and order without freedom of the children," she described. "This leads to resentful, rebellious, and dependent children who have low initiative, low self-esteem, and poor communication skills. The children eventually become like robots," she said.

"Permissive parenting is being tolerant and lax," she contrasted. "There is so much freedom but without order. There are unlimited choices for the children. This leads to children who are manipulative, irresponsible, and socially incompetent." The children become underachievers, self-centered, and with poor moral values, she continued. "Permissive parenting style produces monster children," she exaggerated.

Meanwhile, she recommends democratic parenting where there is firmness but with respect, there is freedom but with order, and the children are given limited choices.

"Democratic parenting produces children who are responsible, confident, and capable adults," she emphasized. "the children will grow up to be self-reliant, self-giving, socially competent, and with well-formed values," she described. Democratic parenting leads to children growing up balanced, she noted.

She told parents that to practice democratic parenting, limits and expectations should be set, choices are respected, challenging opportunities are provided, there is negotiation, and power is shared.

The Internet is not to be feared, she emphasized. "It is not even supposed to be considered as a foe, instead it is a friend where under democratic parenting, filtering Internet access should not even become a concern anymore because children know what is right and correct, what is wrong and bad," she said.

"We should understand our own love languages," she encouraged the parents, describing five love languages or communication keys. She went on to describe Christian counselor and author, Dr. Gary Chapman's The Five Love Languages. These are words of affirmation, gifts, quality time, acts of service, and physical touch. Couples may have different ways of communicating their love for each other, she said, as she called on sample couples to describe how the husband or the wife would express love.

"In the same manner, our own children also have their own love languages," she revealed. Parents have to be conscious of these love languages in order to foster better communication and understanding in the family, she encouraged.

"Our children are our greatest treasure," she pointed out. "And they are our greatest responsibility!" she ended.

Meanwhile, Sr. Maria Remedios R. Cayetano, SPC, Directress-HS Principal, expressed her gratitude that parents responded to the parenting seminar. She thanked the PFC-HS Officers, especially Engr. Annabelle M. Roldan, the out-going president, for spearheading the assembly and at the same time elected a new set of PFC-HS Officers. She further informed the parents of the latest development efforts of the school in uplifting the academic standards and performances of the students. She mentioned among others the strengthening of the mathematics program of the department, providing intervention programs to increase chances of students in passing college entrance examinations, and the plans of the school on the tracks that will be offered for the Senior High School level in 2016. She was happy to inform parents that the students are responding positively in terms of discipline and coming to school on time. She noted that only just a handful are coming to school late.

On the other hand, Mr. Ernesto U. Guillermo, Jr., the HS Academic Chair, presented again to the parents, the inclusion of co- and extra-curricular activities in the determination of honors in the K-12 Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum as provided for in DepED Order No. 74 s. 2012.

Under the DepED Order, candidates for honors shall be drawn from the top 10 students who performed at the Advanced Level and must not have a final grade lower than 85% or Proficient Level and should have no grade at Developing Level in any quarter.

The DepED Order further states that "To determine the top ten (10), pupils/students shall be ranked using the 7-3 point scheme (7 points for academic performance and 3 points for co-curricular activities)..."

Mr. Guillermo presented that the sources of points in co- and extra-curricular activities, which comprise the 3 points in the 7-3 scheme, are contests and competitions, student leadership, campus journalism, officership and membership, and participation and attendance. In the DepED Order, depending on the performance level of the students, specific points could be gained as pre-determined in the Enclosure to the DepED Order.

Mr. Guillermo also took the opportunity to describe to the parents the security of the Internet access of the students in school as closely monitored and secure. He discouraged the parents not to allow their children to bring pocket wifi devices which could afford the students to surf the Internet at any time, anywhere in school, which could compromise Internet access security. This holds true also to cellphones capable of tethering Internet access to other devices. He pleaded for the cooperation of parents as the school's partners in monitoring the Internet access of students, in the light of the talk given by the staff from CeFaM.

He likewise presented to the parents the official Internet sites of the school for Twitter, Facebook, and blog. These are @spcbnews for Twitter, spcbocaueadmin for Facebook, and spcbocaue.blogspot.com for the news site.

Meanwhile, the manner of electing the parent officers, including the nomenclature of the new set of PFC-HS Dep't Inc. Officers were amended and came up with the new officers as follows:
