Fashion Show caps Environment Month celebration

A creative Fashion Show using recyclable materials ended the July celebration of the Environment Month last September 1, 2012.

Spearheaded by the High School Science Area, and in cooperation with the Science Club headed by Mrs. Irma N. Chua, the fashion show showcased the creativity of the different classes. A number of them sought the help of designers to enhance and improve the students' ideas on what to use and how the dresses should look.

"It was very surprising how the class competition went. It tapped the creativity of the students in using what we normally discard and turned them into something fashionable," Mr. Ernesto Guillermo, Jr., the HS Academic Chair declared.

HS Principal’s Council inspects places for educational tour

The Mind Museum in Taguig City will be one of the highlights of the Educational Field Trip for the Grade 7 to 3rd Year.

The High School Principal’s Council personally visited the possible places for the annual educational tour for the department, August 24, 2012.

Led by Sr. Bernadette Racadio, SPC, the Directress and High School Principal, the council visited the Armed Forces of the Philippines Museum at the Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City and the world-class Mind Musem in Taguig City. With her were Mr. Ernesto Guillermo, Jr., the HS Academic Chair, Sr. Ma. Gemma Moralita, SPC, the Christian Formation Head, Mr. Cezar Mendoza, the Clubs and Organizations Chair, Mrs. Emmalou Pineda, the Student Welfare Committee Chair, Mrs. Eufemia Dionson, the Homeroom Chair, Sr. Ma. Vicenta Estrella, SPC, the Finance Officer, and Mrs. Rosanna Guillermo, the Head Librarian.

The AFP Museum showcases the historical armed struggle of the country to attain sovereignty and independence. It features several galleries like the Pre-Colonial Period, American Period, Fil-American War, World War II, and Modern Period among others. The museum also shows special sections like the Medal for Valor Awardees, Pres. Fidel V. Ramos section, and the gallery of all the AFP Chiefs of Staff. The other areas also show the evolution of military uniforms, the armed fleet, arms and ammunitions, aircrafts, dioramas of Filipino military campaigns, and many more. Outside of the museum is a showcase of real military tanks and some military aircrafts.

The museum occupies two floors of the the right wing section of the AFP Museum and Theater Building inside Camp Aguinaldo.

The Mind Museum in Taguig City, on the other hand, is considered world-class in its presentations and exhibits of science and technology. It showcases over 250 hands-on and minds-on interactive exhibits where students are allowed to freely explore them. Some of the notable galleries are the Dance with the Atom, Leap into Life, Walk the Earth, Invade the Universe, and High on Tech. Patrons are greeted by a robotic welcome of Aedi which orients guests about the entire museum.

There are sections about the scientific breaktroughs of the Filipino scientists, about atoms, life, technology, space and beyond, the earth, chemistry, physics, humans, and many more.

As a side trip, the group also went to the Manila Ocean Park to watch the dancing fountain show. Showcasing rhythmically controlled fountains, the fountain show even used projections of sea creatures.

The ocular inspection was arranged by Mrs. Cecilia Bordallo of Slate Educational Tours and Services, the tour coordinator.

The High School Educational Tour will also include The Enchanted Kingdom for the Grade 7 to 3rd Year and Mt. Banahaw in Dolores, Quezon for the 4th Year.

The Enchanted Kingdom had been endorsed lately by the Department of Education as an edutainment destination for educational tours as the theme park had added attractions in the Sciences.

Mt. Banahaw, on the other hand, is held as a holy mountain by many sects, a lot of them situated at the foot or near the mountain itself.

Students will go through the process called pamumuwesto and reflect on the traditions and practices of the people as they pray to the falls, the big rocks, rivers, caves, and the whole mountain. They will learn about their symbolisms and compare them to our Catholic faith. Students will realize the richness of Filipino culture and faith.

Another focus is for them to experience and appreciate the cave, freshwater and forest ecosystems, together with Mt. Banahaw’s rich flora and fauna, which they hardly know of on a first hand basis. Literatures read and textbooks on science and environment will come alive right before them, so to speak.

The 4th Year Field Trip will be jointly managed by Slate Educational Tours & Services and Lakbay Kalikasan’s Outbound Education, complete with tour facilitators with special training in handling activities involving nature and culture.

The tours are scheduled as follows: 4th Year - September 11, Grade 7 and 2nd Year - September 12, and 3rd Year - September 13.
